Taking Care Of Your Beautiful Garden Pond

June 22nd, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Anne Clarke Keep a pond looking great by following certain seasonal, as well as typical guidelines When it is time for the colder air to take over, pond care will still be necessary if you want to maintain the good condition of your pond. Autumn can bring challenges for pond care. The first point I need to make about pond care in autumn leaves that fall into the pond will decay if not removed. Perhaps you can skim the surface of your pond to remove them. However, this method of pond careonce fall is really kicking inmay have to be done many times throughout the same day. One better idea, in my opinion, for keeping falling leaves out of your pond is to purchase a cover for it. Perhaps just a small canvas big enough to cover the water, nothing fancy, you can set it up with stakes or stones. Try to keep as much sludge out of the pond during the colder months. There will be slime, decay of water plants and other plant debris, and you will certainly need to perform the proper pond care to keep your pond from becoming an enormous chore when the warm seasons begin. If you have fish in the water, for great pond care, be sure to feed them less. This is because when the cold approaches the fish will eat less due to a slowing metabolism. Extra fish food in your pond can contribute to the bacterial problems that often develop during the winter. Someone who wants to provide great pond care for his or her pond will want to make sure that, by using good pond care, he or she will keep as few bacterial sources away from the water as he or she possibly can. For your fishes, pond care is very important. You can provide foods for your fish, which contain a protein content of twenty-five to thirty-two percent. A wheat germ based food is good fish pond care. During this time of year the food easily digested. Pond care spring and autumn food is an excellent choice for you to maintain your pond at this time of year. When you practice the proper pond care, you will definitely be glad you did. These are only some of the guidelines for pond care. Depending on your individual pond care needs, the advice I have just given may vary. For example: even if you have no fish in your pond, certain pond care is still especially important. Christianity and Qumran Scrolls

June 19th, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Sharon White Scholars have stressed the similarities between certain thoughts and practices discovered in the documents of Qumran and those that were practiced by the early Christians. From the similar points, we find the rituals of baptism, property, and communal meals. Another very interesting factor is the fact that the people were divided into twelve groups, and each group had a leader or a chief. This reminds us, in a way, of how the apostles of Jesus Christ were twelve and that they would be seated on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. The fact that the Dead Sea Scrolls were written during the beginning of Christianity and during an extremely significant period in the history of Judaism gives them a central meaning and an important value. The scrolls have enabled us to find important information. Some Apocryphal or Pseudepigraphic texts were found in the caves, this includes texts that were already known such as Tobit, Sirach, a Letter of Jeremiah (Baruch 6), Psalm 151, Enoch (1 Enoch), Jubilees, and the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs. The description of the Qumran library is very significant for us to understand what happened inside Judaism years after the Temple had been destroyed and after the end of the occupation of the land. The Dead Sea Scrolls created a debate on whether to consider all the scriptures the authentic words of God. Some believe that scriptures were simply an attempt to cope with the different times and to state clearly to everyone what the divine word of God was, in its essence more than what it is literally. Anyway, the Dead Sea Scrolls have had a huge amount of positive effects on the study of Judaism, the Jewish scriptures, and the Jewish history. Quick Weight Loss or Quackery

June 7th, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Michael Lewis Cellulite - Reduce The Appearance ——————————— Sallie Elizabeth has always had large breasts and a big bottom, and she has accepted them as part of her genetic makeup. But when cellulite appeared in the back of her upper leg, she “freaked out” and resolved to do something about it. A friend recommended endermologie, a deep massage treatment using a motorized device with two adjustable rollers and controlled suction. The device is said to improve the look of cellulite by gently folding and unfolding the skin for smooth and regulated deep-tissue movement. The cellulite is “less visible,” she says, noting her smoother, softer skin. “I feel healthier. My circulation has improved … and I feel more relaxed.” To keep up the effects, the 20-something model visits Smooth Synergy, a cosmedical spa in Manhattan, once or twice a week for 35-minute sessions with the endermologie machine and a technician. Elizabeth may be enjoying her cellulite-busting experience, but experts raise eyebrows at many tools or treatments purported to reduce the appearance of cellulite, trim fat in specific areas, shed pounds, or build muscle, particularly if they claim to replace exercise and good nutrition. “They’re a waste of money,” says Richard Cotton, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise and chief exercise physiologist for myexerciseplan.com. If that is the case, then a sizeable chunk of currency could be going down the drain. According to a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) weight loss advertising trend report, in the year 2000 alone, consumers spent an estimated $34.7 billion on weight-loss products and programs. While it is not known how much of that accounts for sales of unproven or fraudulent merchandise, an FTC study of weight loss ads from different media shows that nearly 40% of ads make at least one false claim, and an additional 15% make at least one claim that is very likely false, or lacks proof. To add to the number soup: Results from a national health survey conducted between 1999 and 2000 indicate that more than six out of every 10 Americans are overweight or obese, a figure that has increased dramatically in recent years. Another recent survey that looked at the attitudes of Americans adults toward their own weight found that despite the fact that two-thirds of men were considered overweight, only about half (51%) said they wanted to lose weight versus 68% of women who said they wanted to lose weight. Put it all together and there are arguably more people wanting to use weight loss products, and according to the government’s trend report, the “marketplace has responded with a proliferating array of products and services, many promising miraculous, quick-fix remedies.” There are, indeed, numerous therapies, including weight loss programs and dietary supplements. Then there are the popular treadmills, bun and ab rollers, the body bow, and bun and thigh max. For this piece, however, WebMD looked only into passive exercise devices such as electrical muscle stimulators and toning tables, cellulite reduction therapies, and gels, creams, eyeglasses, earrings and similar doodads marketed for weight loss, and muscle-building. Granted, not all remedies may be the same, but health professionals say far too many of them can’t be trusted. Passive Weight Loss ——————- To Elizabeth’s credit, she tries to eat right, jog, do Pilates, and perform squats to supplement her endermologie sessions. In fact, good nutrition and regular physical activity are recommended with the treatment. However, many weight loss, cellulite-busting, and muscle-building products promise results without having to do too much. “It’s the idea that an individual can get to the body size they want without any increase in physical activity or without any change in eating,” says Jennifer Anderson, PhD, RD, professor and extension specialist at Colorado State University’s department of food science and human nutrition. She simply laughs at appetite-suppressing eyeglasses, weight loss patches and chewing gum, toning gels, fat-melting creams, and evening solutions that claim to trim waistlines during sleep. “In some instances, it’s a total gimmick,” says Anderson. “In other instances, it will reduce a lot of water weight quickly, but it’s never going to change eating behaviors, activity levels, and make that the key to their lifestyle.” This quick water weight loss never leads to real, long-term weight loss, says Anderson, noting that the only weight loss and toning plan that works involves eating well and moving your body. Furthermore, she says there is no proof that cellulite can be massaged away or taken out by injections of vitamins, special underwear, or use of other gizmos. To get rid of the dimpled fat, weight must be shed, and skin made firmer by doing strength training. Francie M. Berg, a licensed nutritionist, and founder of the Healthy Weight Network, agrees. “If you want to tone your body or become more fit, you need to do the work. It’s not lying on a table, and having [a gadget] lift your feet,” she says referring to no-effort toning tables, beds, and machines. The value of toning and weight loss equipment depends on how much work you can get a person to do to burn energy, says Berg, pointing out that when people see desired results with normally passive devices and treatments, it’s usually because they’ve also made efforts to eat well or exercise. Truth With A Twist —————- Berg coordinates the Task Force on Weight Loss Abuse for the National Council Against Health Fraud, which gives out annual Slim Chance Awards to selected weight loss products. This year’s “worst gimmick” prize went out to MagnaSlim, which claims to relieve stress and its byproduct of overeating by placing magnets and a magnetized solution at specific acupuncture points. The magnet at the acupressure point would supposedly improve cell function, restore Chi (life force energy), and give a person more control over what they put in their mouths. Weight loss promoters have long cashed in on the concept of acupressure and magnetic therapy for weight loss, even though there is no proof it works, says Berg. Items using similar concepts on the market include magnetic weight-loss earrings, adhesives, beads, and seeds. It is apparently not uncommon for manufacturers to piggyback on ideas and studies that may have genuine validity, and twist them for commercial purposes. Another example would be the electrical muscle stimulators (EMS) promoted to do anything from slough off weight to tone muscle to form six-pack abs. Some ads claim this is possible without exercise. Health experts scoff at such an idea, but do say EMS is a valuable tool for physical therapy. “There are times when that really helps,” says Anderson, pointing to rehabilitation programs for people with physical injuries or stroke-related debilitation. “The problem I have with it is if it’s being marketed as muscle stimulation, and that will help you tone up and lose weight,” says Anderson. “Well, it probably will help you tone a little bit, but it shouldn’t take place of being more active and looking at how many calories we put in our mouth each day.” Gad Alon, PhD, associate professor in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation science at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, has studied the effects of EMS, and many promoters often refer to his research in peddling their wares. He says many of these marketers misuse his work, saying things like, “Seven physicians at the University of Maryland have concluded that you may never have to do sit-ups again.” First of all, says Alon, there were no physicians present for the studies; he and his students conducted the studies, and they never addressed the topic of weight loss. Alon warns, though, that some EMS devices in the market might not have the proper specifications to work properly. He says they may use electrodes that do not have good conductivity, or some may be too small to cover large muscle areas. The Damage and what to do with it ——————————– Some of the weight loss gadgets may seem too good to be true, yet even smart people fall for them. Why are people so willing to believe these quick and easy schemes? “Hope springs eternal,” says Edward Abramson, PhD, a clinical psychologist, and author of Emotional Eating: What You Need to Know Before Starting Another Diet. He says people are always looking for a shortcut, especially for difficult, ongoing problems. Besides losing money on bunk products, however, consumers could get their hopes dashed. Abramson says repeated disappointments with weight loss could undermine a person’s overall sense of well-being. He says some people could even internalize blame to a point that could lead to eating disorders. Berg adds that false weight loss systems and goods could also prevent people from seeking real treatment, interfere with responsible programs that do work, and promote distrust of the medical community. To avoid falling prey to such schemes, the FDA says consumers should be particularly skeptical of claims containing words like easy, effortless, guaranteed, miraculous, magical, breakthrough, new discovery, mysterious, exotic, secret, exclusive, and ancient. The experts interviewed by WebMD also recommend concentrating on weight-management strategies that are proven to work, such as incorporating a balanced diet with reduced calories with a regular exercise regimen. Some tips include: Eat more fruits and vegetables. Foods high in fiber such as whole grain breads, fruit, and cereal can help you feel full longer. Exercise. Get 30 minutes of physical activity a day even if you must split it in 10-minute increments throughout the day. Try to exercise on most days of the week; choose an activity you enjoy. Start slowly and then add more days as tolerated. Be accepting. Accept your body the way it is. Maintain. Instead of having a goal to lose weight, think of not gaining it, says Anderson. Be aware of your mind and body while you exercise. Cotton says it helps not to read magazines or watch TV while working out. “When you’re present, you’re better able to make decisions about your habits … and your true needs,” he says. Diet Pills - What To Watch For When Buying Weight Loss Supplements

June 1st, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Ken Black When buying diet pills, there are a couple of different ways to go about it. Some pills are only available by prescription, while others can be purchased over the counter (OTC). There are several different types of weight loss supplements, which will be discussed in the following few paragraphs. Some of the more popular prescription drugs are: Bontril, an appetite suppressant; Xenical, a pill which helps the body absorb fat; Meridia, a supplement that encourages your body to shed pounds, and Phentermine which is easily the most popular appetite suppressant in the United States today. Whereas prescription drugs are available only from a licensed physician, over the counter supplements can be purchased by anyone and contain such ingredients as amino acids, vitamins, minerals, botanicals, herbs, etc. They typically come in capsules, powder, and pill form but are not a substitute for proper diet and exercise. When combined with a healthy well balanced diet and exercise, these pills can be effective in helping you lose weight. When purchasing any weight loss supplement, it is important to speak with your doctor beforehand. When buying an OTC supplement, it is especially important that you check the ingredients, and read the labels carefully. Some serious side effects can occur when using drugs with Ephedra in them, such as arrhythmia, heart valve lesions, and high blood pressure. Fortunately, Ephedra is no longer widely available. Even the most popular weight loss supplements can cause problems, with or without Ephedra present! High doses of caffeine (which many weight loss products have) have been known to cause problems with the heart, and still other drugs are under the suspicions of the FDA. The bottom line when taking any supplement designed to expedite weight loss is to check the ingredients list carefully, make sure it will not react with any other medications you are taking, and speak with your doctor before going on any weight loss plan. It should be noted that even weight loss drugs prescribed by a physician carry risks. If a doctor has prescribed a supplement for you, generally they feel that the benefits outweigh the risks but that does not mean it is safe. You must always follow instructions exactly as prescribed, and stop taking them immediately if you notice any unusual symptoms. Even prescription drugs must accompany a healthy diet and exercise to work. Contrary to what diet pill manufactures want you to believe, no one pill is going to make you lose weight. It takes time and effort, and only a willingness to invest in both will ensure success. If you are serious about losing weight and would like to purchase a weight loss supplement to aid you in your goal, make sure to incorporate a well balanced diet and exercise into your plans. Buying diet pills can be beneficial to your weight loss plans, but only if you are smart about your lifestyle choices. Oriental Medicine: How It Works

May 26th, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Kitty Bradshaw Interviewer: In a recent talk you gave, you said that pain and discomfort are not isolated things. Would you explain why thats true? Kitty: Sure. The 5 Element Theory says that any feelings of pain or discomfort you may have are associated with one or more of your internal organs. Something is wrong in an energetic sense regarding how your Chi is flowing in your body. For example, think of a garden hose: when the water pressure is good, and the hose is not kinked, the water flows strongly and steadily to where it needs to go. On the other hand, if theres a bend in the house, or if the water pressure is weak, the water wont be able to flow to where it needs to be. Interviewer: So, to follow your analogy, youre saying that energy or Chi nourishes the body they way water invigorates a plant? Kitty: In a simple sense, thats right. Let me give you some examples to clarify the relationship between how energy flows in your body and how you feel. Interviewer: Great. That will help a lot of people better understand how Oriental medicine works. Kitty: Its common for people today to experience deficient energy, meaning that its not getting through the hose with enough force and volume to keep the foundational organ energy operating at an optimal level. Deficiency reduces circulation, and the weakest part of your body will show symptoms first. For example, deficient Kidney energy often shows up as a weakness in the knees, deficient Liver energy can make your tendons weak, deficient energy in the Stomach can weaken the muscles, and so on. These relationships are clearly laid out in the 5 Element Theory chart. Interviewer: It is an amazing system. After many years of receiving Oriental medicine treatment myself, and observing the 5 Element Theory relationships in my own body, its like having a road map for health with clearly marked rest stops all along the way. Kitty: Yes, its important, as with many things in life, for a person to know where theyre going and how to get there; and its vital for maintaining good health. Interviewer: So getting back to your point about stagnation and pain or discomfort: What do you do for a person with those symptoms? Kitty: My task is to figure out how to get rid of the acute problem the discomfort or pain which is referred to as the branch part of the problem in Oriental medicine, and then figure out the root cause to prevent the problem from coming back. I do that by getting the energy to flow properly along the meridian leading to the weak organ so it can balance and strengthen itself. Interviewer: Can you give an example? Kitty: Take the case of a relapsing cancer: if you treat the tumor only, youre only treating the symptom the branch. A tumor is a very serious symptom, but its only an indicator of a much deeper problem the root nonetheless. If the treatment of the tumor doesnt address whats causing the stagnation to the part(s) of the body associated with it, you can cut the tumor out, or irradiate it, but theres a significant chance the same conditions that originally caused the tumor will maintain a susceptibility for its return. Interviewer: So there are relationships between the symptoms I feel and my internal organs? Kitty: Absolutely! Remember the devastating tsunami that struck South Asia in 2004?Because of our scientific understanding, we know the wave was caused by an earthquake under the ocean. There was a cause, and an awesome effect. The wave the symptom didnt just become a wave out of nowhere, and its the same with illness and discomfort in our bodies, these problems are the effect of a deeper cause. Interviewer: So the meridians, or energy channels, carry my energy or Chi all around my body; and when I feel ill, or have pain, by making sure the meridian associated with that part of my body is clear, allowing for a strong flow of energy, the internal organ associated with my problem will strengthen, and thats how healing takes place? Kitty: Generally speaking, youve described the process quite well. Lets take a look at severe knee pain, to help readers understand this foundational relationship in how Oriental medicine works. The Chi- or energy-carrying meridian to the urinary bladder and the kidney go through the back of the knee. For a variety of reasons, people today have weak knees which create conditions for tears to ligaments, wearing away of cartilage, displaced knee caps, and other extremely painful conditions. Based on the examples I gave earlier, lets consider these symptoms of the deeper problem, called deficiency. So if you have a knee-related problem you have some considerations to take into account, and choices to make on how to treat the problem. One option some people choose today is to surgically replace the knee; though when you take into account that a reason for your knee problem may be a chronic bladder infection, because the bladder channel goes through the knee, you see that you have more options for addressing severe problems than you know about. Remember the tsunami (severe pain) didnt happen on its own, it was caused by the earthquake, which in this example would be a problem in the urinary bladder or kidneys. Interviewer: So how would you use Oriental medicine to treat a situation like this? Kitty: In a nutshell, as long as you can open a channel so that the energy flows to the supporting organ, and keep it open, a problem generally clears up; and I emphasize ‘generally’ because nothing in life, is absolute. Interviewer: And how do you know when the organ is balanced and the stagnation is gone? Kitty: The problem begins to dissipate and goes away … (Kitty chuckles out loud and says …) And sometimes so does the person who had the problem. Interviewer: Why are you laughing? Kitty: Because once an acute problem or symptom has been dealt with, thats the time to develop an ongoing treatment or maintenance plan, to continue balancing your energy and strengthening your immune system so that similar or new problems are less likely to develop. Interviewer: Thats been my personal experience. When I had a problem that was acute, I needed more regular treatment, but once the problem cleared up, less frequent treatment was needed; in fact, I actually enjoy coming in every few weeks for a tune-up. Kitty: I think thats a wise choice, because often after the original problem clears up, people start to slide back into the habits and behavior that caused the problem in the first place. By coming in once a month, even if youre feeling good, youre able to build up your energy, rather than have it gradually run back down. Its like putting on a clean shirt, no matter what you do, its going to get dirty and needs to be washed. Same with our bodies. Life is full of stresses, pathogens, and the like, and you need to get cleaned up on a regular basis. Marketing ESP

May 18th, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Marcus Schaller Success in business isnt about always knowing what will work ahead of time. Its about taking action, paying attention to what does work, and being flexible enough to adapt and change. When it comes to marketing tactics like direct mail, print advertising and telemarketing, the harder you try to pick a guaranteed winner, the longer it will take you to actually get your marketing off the ground and where it belongsout into the world. Planning is critical, of course, but analysis can too easily replace action. A sales letter is never quite perfect enough, a mailing list never as long and accurate as it could be. In the search for perfection, for guaranteed results, nothing happens. You overanalyze your options, hoping to choose the one right approach. When you finally pick the sure thing, you put all your resources into that one tactic. If you get really lucky, it hits. But that approach is closer to gambling than it is to running a business. No matter how perfect you try to make your marketing tactics and materials, youll never know how good they are until they are released into the wild. The point to marketing is not a perfect ad, but your response and sales from that ad. Until you actually test each marketing tactic, you will have absolutely no idea what will work. Think of yourself as a marketing scientist. Your job is to discover a successful marketing mix by trying a lot of different approaches, tracking results, and keeping what works. You start with a hypothesis (target market, target message, offer, etc) and test it using as many variations as you reasonably can, depending on your budget and schedule. Before you fall in love with any one approach, list as many tactical options as possible. Include basics like direct mail, telemarketing, email, etc., and then continue with more cutting edge approaches. Now, run down the list. Which options are inexpensive or free? Since they are less risky, you have nothing much to lose by trying them. A few good examples would be telemarketing (cold-calling), sales letters, speaking, submitting articles to local media, etc. These are relatively easy to implement, take little or no money, and can at least start getting the word out while you work on more complex marketing tactics. Next, group the choices that may be more expensive or time consuming. Of these, which have the greatest potential for sales and can be rolled out quickly and in small tests? Your experimental marketing plan will have most or all of the tactics from group A, and as many from group B as possible, starting with the least expensive to test. The point here is to avoid blowing your entire budget on 1 or 2 tactics without having first considered all your options and tested as many methods as possible. Of course, the results from some approaches, like writing articles, will be very hard to measure in the short term. But, since these tactics take so little time and money, you can afford to automatically include them as part of a much larger long-term marketing plan. A direct mail test, on the other hand, should generate concrete measurable results almost immediately in order to justify rolling out a larger campaign. The Pros and Cons of Store Cards

May 14th, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Benedict Rohan We all love a bargain and when were faced with a store card offer at the sales counter as we make a purchase, the temptation can be difficult to resist. At face value store cards can seem appealing discounts on purchases, invitations to promotional and preview events, extra money off in the sales, and glossy member magazines and after all, theyre just another credit card, arent they? In fact, no, theyre not just another credit card. Although they may offer some tempting perks, they can be very expensive methods of borrowing that can lead to spiralling debt if the balance isnt paid at the end of the month. Theres no reason why you shouldnt open a store card account if youre sure its going to be an appropriate financial arrangement for you but you should weigh up all the pros and cons carefully before you make any decisions. Check interest rates and hidden fees: Lurking behind the fabulous special offers and discounts are various potential charges and fees that could send your debt soaring out of control. For a start, the interest rates can be more than double those of bank credit cards sometimes as much as 30% APR. And then theres the hidden charges, which can really catch you unawares. Watch out for penalties for late payments or for defaulting on payments. Some cards even charge interest from the purchase date if you dont clear the balance at the end of the month. Pay off the balance if you can: Why shouldnt you take advantage of the offers if theyre there for the taking? You could save a lot of money by opening a store card (for example, discounts of up to 20% may be offered with your first purchase), as long as you are sure that you will be able to pay the bill before interest is charged. Check what the bill period is its normally 30 to 50 days. Also find out whether theres an interest-free introductory period. Work out a budget: If you plan to spend a lot using the store card, work out a monthly budget of how much you will need to set aside to pay the bill, to determine whether you can afford it before you sign up to anything. Investigate other credit options: Store cards seem to easy to set up just completing a short form in front of a sales assistant wholl make a quick phone call to arrange it all for you but these days its really not difficult to obtain credit from a bank, and youll normally get better rates with a bank credit card than you would with a store card. Shop around before you make any decisions investigate what the banks have to offer. Dont be afraid to ask questions or say no: Sales assistants can be quite persistent theyre often on commission for the number of store card accounts that they open. Dont allow yourself to be bullied by them. Feel free to ask any questions and take as long as you want to mull over it. In fact, you dont need to sign on the spot take the forms and documentation away so that you can examine them in detail at home before making your decision. Dont go overboard: One store card might be tempting, but dont get carried away. The more store cards you have, the more difficult theyll be to manage and keep track of and thats when your debts can start to spiral out of your control. How To Support Friends and Loved Ones Through an Abusive Relationship

May 9th, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Annie Kaszina This is a question that comes up a lot. Its hugely frustrating, as well as difficult and painful to watch someone you care about struggle in the quicksand of an abusive relationship. Its frustrating because we can see all the things that they cant. Wed love to help them which probably means getting them to adopt the solution that we know is right. But they dont see it, and theyre not going to do it. Its difficult because you start to feel like youre caught up in Groundhog Day. They reach the point of leaving, they may well even leave and then the whole thing goes around again, and again. Maybe the same partner, maybe a different one. But you hear the same story again and again. In the end your emotional investment wears you out. You end up feeling resentful towards them for what theyre putting you through. Its painful because watching someone turn into a shadow of their former self is tragic. All the more so when there are children who are also suffering. Witnessing the pain of someone you care about and not being able to make it go away, really taxes us. So how do we support them? First we need to be clear about the distinction between helping and supporting them. We cannot help them, i.e. move them on even so much as a millimetre. What we can do is be there for them. That doesnt mean making ourselves available to listen 100% of the time. What it does mean is simply acknowledging and respecting their right to make choices, or else stick with the situation. However disastrous it may appear from the outside, they are making the best choices they can at the time. They already feel pretty bad about themselves; your continued respect may make more of a difference than you could imagine. Second, we mustnt give up on them. There is a very human temptation, at some point, to say Whatever, and walk away. Abusers create a void around their victim that leaves the victim even more dependent. Its very easy to end up becoming irritated with the victim. When you do, youre actually colluding with the abuser. If an abused loved one cant hold on to the thought of life beyond their relationship, then that is something important we can do for them. This simply means believing and trusting that they will come out the other side of this. Even if neither of you can predict the timescale. Third, we can hold onto the knowledge of who they truly are. Over time, living with a self-appointed King of the Jungle reduces them to feeling little better than a cockroach. We can hold and remind them of- their gifts, their qualities, their uniqueness, their lovableness, until they are able to do it for themselves. Our vision may be the resource that starts them on their journey to recovery. It doesnt even have to be a major holding operation on our part. Remember, abuse leaves its victims starving because it systematically closes down any channel of nourishment. Often, by opening up a channel we offer them more sustenance than we could possibly imagine. To a friend of mine who has suffered hugely at the hands of a homicidally brutal partner and lost sight of herself, I sent a list of the blessings that she did not see. The list is incredibly empowering for her and she treasures it. It reads like this: 1) You are blessed with good and loving friends. 2) You inspire great love in those around you. 3) You have two wonderful children - maybe not easy, but definitely wonderful. 4) You have enormous strength. 5) You have a vast reservoir of talents. 6) You are an extraordinarily loving and supportive person. 7) You have a talent for creating beauty. 8) You have an extraordinarily attractive personality 9) You have formidable energy 10) All this and there is still, I’d guess, about another 85% of capacity that you are currently not able to access efficiently. My friend is unique and gifted. So are all our friends and loved ones. Another persons list may be different, but it will be no less extraordinary. We are all uniquely gifted and wonderful. Yet we may need to have our eyes opened to this fact. Repeatedly. We support others best when we offer them a valid, empowering vision of themselves. We support ourselves when we do the self-same thing for ourselves. (C) Annie Kaszina 2004 Annie Kaszina Specialist Women’s Empowerment Coach and NLP Practitioner. Introduction to the Online Master’s in Nursing

May 1st, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Amanda Jones If you are interesting in taking your nursing career to the next level, this introduction to the online master’s in nursing can help you begin the process of looking for the best online program for you. One of the primary benefits of completing your degree online is that you do not need to interrupt your current career path in order to obtain a graduate degree. Another advantage to obtaining a master’s degree in nursing online is that there are many choices available. Choosing a Program One of the first things to consider in the introduction to the online master’s in nursing option is the type of program you’re interested in. No matter what your career goals, you can probably find an online master’s program to support those goals. Alternatively, if you aren’t yet sure what type of program you want to pursue, you may be pleasantly surprised at your options. Conduct Research One thing you will quickly discover, and that is important to note in this introduction to the online master’s in nursing, is that many of the schools who provide online degree programs offer graduate degrees. What this means is that those seeking graduate degrees in nursing online have more options. This, then, requires that you carefully research all your options and choose the best program for you. There are many quality schools offering graduate degrees in nursing online. Accreditation As with traditional schools, accreditation is an important element in determining your top choice. The school you choose should be accredited by one of the two primary professional nursing associations. These are The National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission and The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Clinical Work When choosing a program, consider the clinical requirements for the degree. Even though you can attend an online institution located far away, you’ll need to do your clinical work “live,” as this cannot be done online. Before beginning a program, determine if you will be able to complete the clinical portion and how much support the school provides in setting up this portion of the degree requirements. South Beach Diet - South Beach Diet Plan Information

April 28th, 2008 by allanrozumna

By Carrie Reeder Perhaps you’ve had them too, nightmares about rice cakes, granola, and eight glasses of water a day. Do visions of diet supplements, green tea and mechanical scales dance through your head? If so, you are not alone. The hardest part of committing to a diet program is the fear of giving up your favorite foods in favor of dry, tasteless “diet foods.” With the South Beach diet, however, there is a plethora of delicious, healthy meals that can fit into your daily routine without forcing you to take out your taste buds. While your grocery list may change at first, committing to the South Beach diet does not mean giving up eating, or giving up eating well. During the first two weeks, all carbs are forbidden, but that doesn’t mean you can only eat steak and chicken. Stocking up on things like eggs, broccoli, zucchini, low-fat cheeses, and nuts is a great way to combat cravings for breads and cereals. No doubt, that the first two weeks breakfast is the biggest challenge to surmount, but replacing your usual bowl of cereal or bagel with eggs and a low fat cheese, or cottage cheese is a great way to start the day. Don’t forget that in phase two fruits and some sugar are introduced back into your diet, so that cup of cottage cheese can easily be sweetened with some strawberries. Also, eating some lean bacon with your poached eggs or throwing some cheese and veggies into an omelet can mix things up. Pack some veggies and a cottage cheese dip or peanut butter for a mid-morning snack, and some nuts or cheese for late afternoon. Use the prohibition of bread for your first two weeks as a way to throw some variety into your usual sandwich routine. A pepper stuffed with feta and mixed veggies is easily reheated in the break room, and tuna salad does not need to go on a sandwich. In phase two, whole grains are re-introduced, so a whole grain pita with your salad is a good way to keep you going until your afternoon snack. Dinner time may well be the easiest time to maintain your South Beach diet program, as you can play with the shopping list, developing savory sauces and seasonings to compliment healthy meat, vegetable, and tofu dishes. Don’t be discouraged if after your first two weeks, your weight loss slows to a crawl of about two pounds a week. This is normal and healthy, and as you change your lifestyle through the South Beach diet program, you will continue to lose weight and keep it off. There are a ton of online tips and how to programs, as well as meal plans and suggested supplements based around the South Beach diet program. If you find yourself getting bored with the same old choices, get online and find some more recipes. Don’t forget, unlike other low carb diet programs, the South Beach diet doesnt make you commit to a carb-free life. What it does do is help you develop a healthy balance between good carbs and fats which in turn wont just melt off water weight that will return. Instead, it creates a life-long system of healthy living. There are many products available to help you lose weight. There are supplements, diet plans, programs, systems and online diet monitors that will help you manage your eating habits and measure your weight loss progress. Some of these companies provide support and help with your dieting program. We can help you by providing you with a free list of our recommended best sources for effective weight loss products and services.
